Meet the BBS Ameraucana Chicken: Beauty, History, and Charm in One Breed

The BBS Ameraucana—short for Blue, Black, and Splash Ameraucana—is a striking variety of a distinctly American breed that has captivated backyard chicken keepers and poultry show enthusiasts alike. Developed in the 1970s and officially recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA) in 1984, Ameraucanas were bred to retain the unique blue egg trait of their Araucana ancestors while eliminating lethal genes and refining their appearance.

History & Origins Ameraucanas were selectively bred from Araucanas imported from South America. American breeders aimed to preserve the blue egg gene while standardizing traits for consistency and health. The BBS variety refers to the color genetics that link Blue, Black, and Splash birds—when bred together, they produce a range of these hues in predictable combinations.

Physical Characteristics These birds boast a full beard and muffs, giving them a fluffy-faced look that adds to their charm. They have pea combs, slate-colored legs, and express no feather tufts or rumplessness like their Araucana cousins. Blue eggs are their hallmark, and the shell color is both rare and beautiful.

Personality & Behavior BBS Ameraucanas are known for their calm, curious, and friendly demeanor. They’re hardy in cold climates, relatively quiet, and do well in both free-range and confined settings. While not overly affectionate, they tend to be gentle and enjoy human interaction without being overly needy.

APA Standard of Perfection According to the APA Standard of Perfection, Ameraucanas must exhibit:

  • A full beard and muffs

  • A medium-sized, upright pea comb

  • Slate or black legs depending on feather color

  • Distinctive body shape: compact and well-proportioned with a broad back and full breast

  • Only blue eggs—no green or olive hues allowed for show birds

Color standards for Blue, Black, and Splash varieties are clearly defined. Blues should have even, laced plumage, Blacks must be glossy and solid, and Splash birds can show random patterns of light and dark blue.

Whether you're looking for a show-quality bird or a beautiful layer of blue eggs, BBS Ameraucanas offer a perfect blend of elegance, utility, and personality.
